Until the Catholic Church raised the woman to her proper place in society, the woman was often seen as nothing more than a mere slave. Leighton’s Accolade illustrates this elevation of the woman very well in that it is no man, but a woman, knighting the knight. She stands, while he kneels. It is she, dressed in the white of purity, inspiring the man to rise to levels of virtue that have been either ignored or thought inconceivable. As Henry Wadsworth Longfellow tells us in his poem Hiawatha:
"As unto the bow the cord is,
So unto the man is woman;
Though she bends him, she obeys him,
Though she draws him, yet she follows;
Useless each without the other!"
