While Edmund Blair Leighton’s painting itself contains no visible religious symbolism, the work is, in a sense, religious by its very title God Speed!. The words “God Speed” comes from the Middle English words “God Spede” or “God aid you.” In this painting, the lady ties her colors about the arm of her knight wishing him “God Speed!” or “God’s protection” in battle. What it illustrates is that religion was not simply something of a Sunday matter, but was part of everyday life. So integrated into that daily routine was it, that Leighton is able to paint what seems a secular painting with a deeply religious attitude in it.
