According to Scripture, Christ simply said to Saint Mathew, “Sequere me” or “Follow me”; and he did. Caravaggio illustrates this scene in fashion of the Renaissance naturalists: all the characters were portrayed in everyday attitudes and dressed in contemporary fashions. Inside the room, the Levi are shrouded in the darkness of ignorance and vice, and it is Christ who brings light of truth and grace to the room. Also, Christ’s pointing arm is reminiscent of God’s arm in Michelangelo’s creation of Adam. Just as God, in Michelangelo’s work, is calling Adam to wake to a new world, Christ is calling St. Mathew to a new world, namely the kingdom of Heaven.
