This chalk cartoon of the Virgin Mary with her mother Saint Anne, the child Jesus, and John the Baptist is one of Leonardo da Vinci’s uses of sfumato in order to portray the human figure in three dimensions. Here Saint Anne and the Blessed Mother are conversing. Saint Anne’s right hand is pointing heavenwards, which is a characteristic of several of Leonardo’s paintings. The Christ Child, leaning across His mother’s lap, is blessing his cousin Saint John.
