St. Paul Preaching at Ephesus – Le Sueur

This artwork by Le Sueur shows Saint Paul preaching at Ephesus. The burning of pagan books and manuscripts takes place in the foreground of the image. In the background, apostles are engaging in the imposition of hands and alms-giving. Some other men are holding a fierce debate. St. Paul stands at the center. The inspiration for this artwork comes from Acts 19:18-19:  "And many of them that believed, came confessing and declaring their deeds. And many of them who had followed curious arts, brought together their books, and burnt them before all; and counting the price of them, they found the money to be fifty thousand pieces of silver. "
