William Bouguereau’s painting Compassion illustrates a valuable lesson of Bouguereau’s own life. The year before this painting was published his mother had passed away. Here Bouguereau depicts an aging man – the artist was about seventy-one when he painted this picture – leaning against the cross of Christ, attempting to comfort the Savior. This theme of finding comfort in Christ, or the Blessed Mother, was prevalent during certain periods in the artist’s life. Works, such as Pieta, The First Mourning, and Virgin of Consolation, captured Bouguereau’s sorrows throughout his life when either his children or his wife passed away.
