This rarely-seen work portrays a seldom seen view of the Passion in art. The classic depiction of the scene where Pilate presents Christ to the people is usually from the front. However, in this case, we have a view from behind. We barely see the Jews outside but more Pilate and his court of Roman followers. The woman on the right could quite possibly be Pilate's wife for she looks as if she is the only Roman in anguish. She slowly treads away from the scene bearing the sorrow of an innocent man about to be put to death.
