What am I supposed to do with a digital download?

1 – Print it yourself.

2 – Save the image to a flash drive or burn it on a CD/ DVD, and take it to a print shop of your choice. This option gives you more versatility on what you can get your image printed on and what size of picture you can get (depending on the print shop of course).

Are there any papers you recommend if I print it myself?

It depends on what you like and what your printer can do. If you have a photo or color printer, then you can most likely print on glossy/matte photo paper. One of our choices for budget art printing is Epson premium presentation paper, which is available at most big computer stores. It’s rigid like an index card, non glossy, and delivers superb detail.

How do you make sense of the numbers in each product description (circled in red in the picture below)?

The above numbers mean that the image you are buying (Madonna and Child by Gentileschi in this case) is 8.5 inches wide and 11.9 inches high with 300 dots per inch (Or, to be more precise, the image is 2,550 pixels wide and 3,581 pixels high). Since there are 300 dots per inch, the image quality is richer than if there were only 72 dots per inch; this means that the image could be easily blown up to, say, 17” x 24” without losing image quality. However, had the same image been only 72 dots per inch, it could not be blown up so large without losing image quality. It could probably be printed at 11” x 14” without losing quality, but no more than that.

Once you have a high-resolution, digital image, there is no reason why it has to remain at the size listed. It can easily be cropped, altered, or enlarged with even a basic photo editing program.
