St. Jerome in Meditation -- Caravaggio
Giclee, Fine-Art Print of Museum Quality on the finest heavy-stock paper using archival inks.
In 382 A.D., Pope Damasus commissioned Saint Jerome to translate the Old Testament into Latin. This St. Jerome did, but also continued to translate the rest of the Bible into what we refer today as the Vulgate. In St. Jerome Writing, Caravaggio captures the aged Saint working at his translation. The Saint appears the same as he does in the other paintings of the St. Jerome by Caravaggio: a lean, fatigued, old man. The skull illustrates the inevitability of death. Here is draws a unique comparison between the brevity of man’s life and the permanence of God’s words.
