Prayer to the Madonna -- Maurice Bombard
Giclee, Fine-Art Print of Museum Quality on the finest heavy-stock paper using archival
inks.
Unlike
the academic artists of his time, Maurice Bombard did not idealize his
characters by imagining visions of classical characters. Instead, his
art focused on the everyday person and everyday actions, as seen in A Prayer to the Madonna. Chesterton, in Famous Paintings,
claims that Bombard called this work “A scene of popular life in
Venice.” In this work, Bombard draws a simple Venetian girl on her
knees before a shrine to Our Lady. However, the most interesting point
of this painting is that the viewer becomes part of the work of art.
The audience seems to be literally looking through an open door at the
scene, as if he or she were really there.
