While Jean-Leon Gerome may not be the most familiar artist’s name to many people, his work like this one of The Christian Martyrs’ Last Prayer is often before our eyes. There are two groups of Christians being martyred. The first group is that of the human torches. The second groups, kneeling on the sand and praying for strength, wait for their own deaths by the lions and tigers. Gerome depicts the martyrdom of the Christians in the coliseum during the persecutions of Nero.
