Suggestions for picking a mat:
If all else fails, go with a cream color -- it works with virtually anything.
Opposites attract -- a green mat goes well with a gold frame.
Think about what room you will be putting your art in -- a gold frame will get lost on a yellow wall (think contrast).
Enhance the image, don't make the mat/frame the center of interest -- Caravaggio might have had an aneurysm if he saw his Conversion of St. Paul with a gold mat and a gold frame hanging in your kitchen. Then again, he's deceased.
Generally, if there is a color in an image that is not dominant, it will work to choose a mat close to that color -- less is more.
