St. Peter Receiving Keys from Christ – Perugino

Collections: Saints

Category: Male Martyr Popular

Jesus hands the keys (symbol of authority) of the Catholic church to the apostles Peter in this painting by Perugino.

Saint Peter, "Simon Peter", the brother of James, was the first Pope of the Church. He was martyred in Rome by upside-down crucifixion, not feeling worthy to die the same way his Lord did. He is the patron saint of the Papacy, the Catholic Church, bakers and fishermen.
