In much of Bouguereau’s work, there is a pronounced sense of peace and gentility. This awareness is not more felt than in his Song of the Angels, in which the angelic harmony puts both Babe and Mother to sleep. The Blessed Mother, even while she is sleeping, keeps her maternal bearing, as seen in the gentleness and yet firmness with which she holds her Infant.
