St. Charles Borromeo prays with crossed arms in this artwork by Tiepolo. He was the Archbishop of Milan, then cardinal, then Secretary of State under Pope Pius IV. He is known for his work to help those suffering from the great plague that broke out in Milan in the 16th century. He also founded the Oblates of St. Ambrose. He is the patron saint of learning and the arts.
